Three websites where the main button did not do what it said

A booking button that opened an email to fill in by hand. A link to check wedding dates that led nowhere. A page telling people to use a contact form that was not there. None of the three needed a new website.

These businesses are not clients. Everything here was seen on their own public websites, and nobody is named.

What I saw

On a driveway and paving firm's site, the button labelled Make A Booking did not open a booking form. It opened an email with a list of questions in it, so the customer had to type out their name, address, the job and a preferred date by hand, then wait for a reply to find out whether that date was free. A wedding photographer published clear packages and prices, then offered a button to check your wedding date that went nowhere, on the one question every couple asks first. A bathroom fitter's page told visitors to fill in one of their contact forms, but there was no form on the page, only a link off to a different one, from a showroom that closes at half four and all day on Wednesdays.

What’s causing it

None of these are design problems, and none of the three sites looked broken. This is usually what happens when a site is checked on the day it goes live and never used again by the person who owns it. A form plugin gets removed, a placeholder link never gets filled in, a button gets pointed at an email address because the booking tool was not ready yet. The owner sees the homepage. The customer sees the dead end, and the business never hears about it, because someone who gives up does not send a message to say so.

What I’d do first

Fix the broken thing and nothing else. Point the booking button at a short form that asks for the job, the postcode and a photo. Put a real date check, or even a simple form asking whether a date is free, behind that link. Put the missing form back on the page. None of that is a new website, and telling any of these businesses they needed one would be selling them a fix for a problem they do not have. After that, someone should click every button on the site every few months, because that is all it took to find these.
